AFIR

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) was presented by the European Commission on 14 July 2021 and aims at enabling the EU to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions and at achieving climate neutrality in 2050.

To address this, the European Union has laid out a set of rules surrounding EV (fast) charging and will certainly go a long way in further bolstering Europe’s already robust EV-focused infrastructure.

For example, the rules stipulate that payment for use of the charging facilities must be accessible and easy for everyone. This means, easy and convenient payment methods.

Therefore, ad hoc payment methods are one of the key elements of AFIR. Publicly accessible EV chargers will accept common payment methods such as debit cards and/or QR code payments while providing transparent pricing information. Transparent and non-subscription-based payment options will be mandatory for publicly accessible charging stations, including QR codes for charging stations under 50kW, and payment card readers for charging stations equal to or over 50kW.

What are ad hoc payment QR codes?

The QR code allows an EV driver to charge at your public charging station, without having a charging card or a MSP contract.
After scanning the QR code, you are redirected to a secured payment page, where you can then complete the payment (via Visa, Maestro or Mastercard) and start/stop the charging session.

For who?

All fully public charging stations that were put into operation after 13/04/2024 and have a capacity of < 50kW
